PARTIAL LARYNGECTOMY

  • From the moment of discharge you must remain on home rest for seven days after surgery. Avoid physical exertion, such as lifting weights for a month. You may not drive any kind of vehicle or use dangerous machinery until one month after the intervention. Avoid talking for the first 7 days and then avoid long conversations for a week.
When you start talking, avoid forcing your voice, as well as whispering. Avoid the telephone.
Some degree of cervical swelling is normal, especially when getting up. Avoid dusty, smoky and noisy environments. Normal diet, slightly soft and warm, when swallowing, do it slowly and in small quantities. Start with a pasty diet, drinking liquids in small gulps. Cough frequently and slightly after each swallowing. It is advisable to eat frequently but in small amounts at a time.
  • The cannula should be cleaned and changed according to the instructions received.
It is usually changed daily, with subsequent cleaning of the tracheostoma of secretions and antisepsis of the tracheostoma bed. Then a clean and prepared cannula is placed with all its accessories. It is advisable to always have your replacement cannula completely prepared before starting the cannula change, as there are tracheal cannulae that may have a tendency to close very quickly. If you have a lot of secretions, without the need to change the tube more than once a day, you can remove the inner cannula whenever you need to clean it and put it back in once it is clean.
reinsert it once it is clean.
  • If you are instructed to do so by your doctor
  • If you are instructed not to change the cannula, you should remove the inner cannula (liner) daily or whenever necessary, clean it and replace it inside the other one. If you choke very often, you should consult with your doctor. It is normal to stain the saliva with blood but in small quantity and occasionally, not continuously. For pain, take the indicated painkillers. In case you were taking aspirin or other antiplatelet medication before the procedure, you should consult with your doctor when to restart the treatment. If the fever is higher than 38° go to the emergency room or contact your doctor, as well as in case of severe pain, bleeding or difficulty breathing.
