From the moment of discharge, the patient must remain on home rest for the first three days after the operation, and will avoid physical exertion such as lifting weights.

  • You may not drive any kind of vehicle or use dangerous machinery until authorized by your doctor. You may not drink alcoholic beverages until after the first three days. The diet will be soft and in moderate quantity for the first 24 hours.
  • You must not get your ear wet and you will not wash your head until your doctor authorizes you to do so. You will avoid sleeping on the operated side.
  • It may stain your ear.
  • You may stain the cotton or bandage with some blood on the first day and more lightly for a few more days.
  • It is normal to notice mild to moderate instability which may be uncomfortable; if so keep on bed or chair rest and take medication as indicated. Some mild to moderate tinnitus is normal.
  • Some mild to moderate tinnitus is normal.
  • Effect movements gently, especially when getting up and lying down, and have yourself accompanied if you need to go down stairs and notice instability, even if slight.
  • You may have some discomfort or slight pain that will subside with the indicated painkillers.
  • Avoid constipation; if necessary you can use a mild laxative for a few days.
  • You should contact your doctor or go to the ER in case of very severe pain that does not subside with the recommended painkillers or fever above 38°.
