The epistaxis, by Dr. Isabel Sánchez

Dr. Isabel Sánchez, otolaryngologist at the Centro Integral de Otorrinolaringología (CIO), explains the main causes of epistaxis in children and the elderly:“Epistaxis is nasal bleeding. This pathology is always said to be typical of children because they have very superficial veins and bleed easily, and of grandparents because the vessels are usually less resistant and break more easily.Older people usually take a lot of anticoagulant medication and have problems with arterial hypertension, which facilitates this problem. If a patient bleeds, it is usually self-limited bleeding that is not usually important, unless itis very repetitive over time, then it must be treated, sometimes it is only necessary to cauterize in the office and other times, in important cases, the patient must be admitted and even go into surgery to solve the problem”.
