Otoplasty, by Dr. Eduardo Morera

dr. Eduardo Morera, otorhinolaryngologist at the Centro Integral de Otorrinolaringología (CIO), explains what otoplasty, a surgical technique on the ears, consists of and explains the treatment process:“Otoplasty is the surgical technique that allows modifying the shape of the auricular pavilions. Itis the surgery that is performed for the popularly known as protruding ears deformity or ear pinnae.People can be operated from seven years of age, which is when the growth of the auricular cartilage has already been completed. In children it is done under general anesthesia and in adults it can be done with local anesthesia or, at most, with local anesthesia plus sedation. The patient goes home immediately after the surgery. It is a surgery whose postoperative period is very comfortable and there is only a little discomfort in the auricle when resting it, which goes away with anti-inflammatory drugs.

Patients have to wear ear molds attached by adhesive tape for a week. After two weeks, the patient can resume his sports activities and his daily life as if he had not undergone surgery. The degree of satisfaction of the patients operated on at Centro Integral de Otorrinolaringología is very high and we have one of the lowest recurrence rates on the whole island”.
