Obstructive sleep apnea, by Dr. José Manuel Meléndez, M.D

Dr. José Manuel Meléndez explains the consequences of obstructive sleep apnea on the quality of life of the child or adult who suffers from it:“Obstructive sleep apnea is a breathing disorder in which there is a partial or complete obstruction of ventilation. This will alter the normal sleep patterns. We can diagnose a child for two reasons: one, because the parents tell us that they have objectified the snoring or even breathing pauses, or because we see in the child the consequences of this obstruction such as concentration problems, poor school performance and even alterations in growth, development or behavior. They are usually hyperactive children and sometimes even grumpy. In these cases we have to suspect that the child may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. It is important to make a good assessment, taking a good history of the problem, in order to propose an adequate solution, which may include at certain times tonsil and adenoid surgery. At the Centro Integral de Otorrinolaringología (CIO) we have all the resources for an adequate diagnosis and, consequently, to be able to propose the optimal treatment for each case.
