Hypoacusis or “sudden deafness”

Hypoacusis or sudden deafness is the loss of hearing in three or more contiguous frequencies, in less than 72 hours, generally unilateral. Its treatment should be carried out as soon as possible for the complete recovery of hearing.

The procedure consists of administering oral corticosteroids and, in case they are contraindicated or do not improve hearing, applying them through the eardrum. This method is performed in the same office, under microscopic vision, instilling a few drops of local anesthesia and inoculating the corticosteroids through the tympanic membrane. The procedure is hardly annoying and lasts only a few minutes. In the Centro Integral de Otorrinolaringología (CIO) we perform this technique regularly and satisfactorily.
