How allergic rhinitis affects the quality of life of those who suffer from it and its treatment, by Dr. Santiago Quer

Dr. Santiago Quer, otolaryngologist at the Centro Integral de Otorrinolaringología – CIO, explains the main symptoms of allergic rhinitis, how it affects the quality of life of those who suffer from it and the most effective treatments to control its effects:“Allergic rhinitis is one of the most frequent causes of nasal inflammation that exist, in fact we can say that it is the most frequent and includes a series of symptoms that are not always easily recognizable.

Normally, patients often confuse viral rhinitis, i.e., that caused by a virus, the typical cold, can be confused most of the time with what is allergic rhinitis.Allergic rhinitis usually includes a number of symptoms that are actually easily recognizable and distinguishable from a common cold as nasal itching, sneezing, mucus quite important, quite profuse and quite clear. It does not usually cause fever or general malaise and in many occasions it does cause the typical itching of the eyes and nose, together with an itchy throat.

In fact, this type of itching can be quite intense and serves to differentiate one thing from the other. Of course, the duration also plays a role, because allergic rhinitis can last all year long, depending on the type of allergen, or even a few months. On the other hand, rhinitis caused by a cold does not usually produce so much itching, the mucus is usually much thicker, even yellow on many occasions, and also does not usually last so long, from 7 to 15 days at most.

At the Centro Integral de Otorrinolaringología we can perform treatments for allergic rhinitis and we manage to control this type of pathology quite well and, most importantly, we can also diagnose them by means of endoscopy techniques to differentiate them from other types of rhinitis”.
