Dysphagia, by Dr. Meritxell Tomás

Dr. Meritxell Tomás, otolaryngologist at the Centro Integral de Otorrinolaringología (CIO), explains what dysphagia is and how to avoid major problems:“Dysphagia is a term used to define that there is a problem swallowing solids, liquids or both. These problems can be caused by anatomical alterations in the oral cavity, the europharynx or hypopharynx, the esophagus or by functional problems.

When a client has frequent swallowing problems, he/she should go to a specialist so that we can request the appropriate tests to reach a diagnosis and in such a case, to implement a series of general or specific measures for the patient’s problem and thus avoid situations such as aspiration of food content from the airway, which can lead to serious problems such as pneumonia or bronchitis”.
